Northern California

The Northern California Chapter of the Visual Resources Association (VRA NoCal) is composed of visual resources professionals from a variety of institutions and organizations. Our purpose is to support and encourage professional development among our members in Northern California. Membership is open to anyone with an interest in visual resources management.

CaVraCon 2017

The California Visual Resources Association Conference (CaVraCon) will be taking place next Monday and Tuesday(June 12+13) in the Wurster Hall auditorium (room 112) and gallery (next door) at UC Berkeley’s College of Environmental Design.

An exciting program is in place with distinguished speakers addressing the following topics: Digital Capture/Digitization, Copyright for Visual Materials, 3D/VR/Emerging Imaging Technologies, Engaging Communities in Collaborative Research/Digital Humanities, Collection Access/Digital Publishing & Exhibits, and more.

Monday evening there is a reception where attendees can mingle and meet the commercial and non-profit partners who so generously sponsored CaVraCon 2017. In addition to our gracious hosts—UC Berkeley’s History of Art Department and College of Environmental Design—sincere thanks to go to: ACT3 Partners, Archivision, Digital Revolution, Gawain Weaver Art Conservation/Two Cat Digital, and Shared Shelf. Bring business cards to enter drawings for prizes at the end of the evening (you must be present to win).

Fall 2016

We had some interesting presentations from our chapter members on current projects, including:

Carl Schmitz, Diebenkorn Foundation
Carl spoke about his work on the recently published Richard Diebenkorn Catalogue Raisonné

Lynn Cunningham, Visual Resources Center, UC Berkeley
Lynn presented a demo of a project in process by the VRC and Professor Elizabeth Honig called OpenArt. OpenArt (in Beta stage) is an open-source, Drupal-based cataloging and online publishing tool for creating online catalog raisonnés.

Jason Hosford, Visual Resources Center, UC Berkeley
Jason presented on the digitizing and cataloging of a collection of images gifted to the UCB VRC in 2014 from the late James Cahill, Professor Emeritus at UC Berkeley and a preeminent scholar of Chinese painting.
